Create Tattoos In SecondLife Using Gimp

 Hello friends!

Have you ever wanted to design your own custom tattoos in Second Life but don’t have access to Photoshop? Don’t worry! You can absolutely use GIMP — a free and open-source image editing tool — to create tattoos just as effectively.

The result may not be as perfect as those made by experienced creators, but this method will help you save money, express your creativity, and serve as a great starting point for learning.

In fact, I created a video tutorial 3 years ago on my YouTube channel showing exactly how to do it—step-by-step. It's still one of the most requested topics from fellow creators, so I thought I’d bring it back here on my blog.

Disclaimer: I’m not a professional in this field. I originally did this for personal use, but now I create not just tattoos, but also nails and makeup — and I’ve ended up selling them at affordable prices.

🖌️ What You’ll Need:

GIMP (Download it here)

A Second Life tattoo template usually comes with upper & lower body maps

(PSD Copy) (PNG Copy)

Some basic knowledge of layers and alpha channels

Imagination and creativity!

༄ Quick Steps (Full Details in the Video):

Set up your tattoo template by loading a Second Life UV body template into GIMP. Then, design your tattoo using the brush tool, importing PNGs, or creating your own artwork. Make sure to keep your design on a transparent layer above the base map and place it precisely on the area where you want the tattoo to appear.

Make sure to add an alpha channel so the tattoo can have transparent areas or simply use Background Remover tool.

༄ Export as .PNG

Save your finished design with transparency intact.

Test and Wear

Log in to your Second Life account and open your inventory. Click the + sign at the top right corner of the inventory window. From the menu, select "Add New Clothes", then choose "Add New Tattoo."

Right-click on the "New Tattoo" item and select "Add to Outfit" to wear it. Then, right-click it again and choose "Edit" to begin customizing.

If you're creating a tattoo for the legs or feet, be sure to click the lower texture box in the edit section to apply your texture to the correct area.

Important Note: Do not upload your tattoo texture to Second Life just yet to avoid mistakes or disappointment — each upload costs L$10. Instead, test your textures first by applying them locally. This allows you to make adjustments easily without incurring costs.

༄ Upload to Second Life

Once you're satisfied with the result, save your changes and return to the edit menu to load the final texture. If everything looks good and no further edits are needed, you're ready to upload your tattoo texture as a .png file.

Click 'Build' to open the menu, then choose Upload > Image. Select your texture from your computer and click 'OK'.

༄ Lastly

Wear it with pride—or even sell/gift it in your store!

༄ Not affiliated with GIMP

Not everyone wants to invest in Photoshop, and GIMP gives you freedom to create without the price tag. It may take a bit of practice, but it’s 100% capable of pro-quality tattoo textures for SL.

If you’re new to creating in Second Life, or want to start designing tattoos for yourself or your store, this is a great way to dip your toes into content creation!
